Asia
Asia is the largest continent with the highest world’s population. The continent’s major part is located on the Northern and Eastern hemisphere joining Europe called Eurasia and joining Europe and Africa called Afro-Eurasia. With the total area covering 44,579,000 square kilometers or 30% of the world’s total land or 8.7% of the total world’s surface, it has long been human habitat with early civilizations. With 4.5 billion people or 60% of the world’s population, it locates both the areas of heavily dense and spread population. It borders the Pacific Ocean on the east and the Indian Ocean on the south. The borderline between Asia and Europe has been the hub of several histories and cultural structures since it has no clear geographical division. This has facilitated transfers and exchanges among different ethnic groups of during the classical period. Therefore, it highlights the differences more in terms of cultures and ethnicities than the geographical borderlines from the eastern part of Suez Canal, Ural River, the Ural Mountains, the Turkey Channels, the Southern Caucasus Mountains, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. China and India had been the largest economies from 1 – 1800 AD. With the economic power, China had attracted a large number of people to the East and the legend of Ancient India’s prosperity and gorgeous cultures were the symbols of Asia. These were attractive for trades, exploration and European colonization.
The discovery of Trans-Atlantic route by accident by Christopher Columbus while trying to find another way to India is another evidence of the attraction. The silk roads had been the main trading routes between the East and the West, and the Malaca Channel was one of the most important trading-route in the 20th century.
The economies of Asia have been growing enormously especially in Eastern Asia while the population growth has been slowing. Asia is the origin of several religions namely Christianity, Islam, Judah, Hindu, Bhuddhism, Confucianism, Toaism, Jainism, Sikism, Zoroaster and several others. Since it is so vast and so is the differences in ideologies, naming was done mainly according the characteristics of people rather than geographical condition. Sharp contrasts of Asia can be seen in several aspects such as geography, races, cultures, environments, economies, histories and political systems. The climate is another big difference between hot areas in the Middle-east deserts, temperate zone on the East, sub-Arctic on Central Asia and Arctic climate zone in Ziberia.
